* The particulate matter from wood
smoke is a serious health threat
because of the extremely small size of
the particles. Most are less
than 2.5 microns in diameter.
Environmental scientists have been most
concerned about health
effects caused by these very small
particles because:
1)
These smaller particles stay airborne much longer than heavier
particles, which means that they are
more likely to find their way
into lungs, and
2)
Because they are so small, they bypass protective body mechanisms
(ex. cilia in lungs) and collect in the
deepest portions of the
lungs, where they cause structural and
chemical changes." These
tiny particles are known as PM2.5 because they measure less than 2.5 micrometers in diameter,"
explained coauthor Dr. Douglas Dockery, professor of environmental
epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health. "They are
so small that they can get past the normal defense mechanisms in the
lungs and penetrate deeply into the air exchange regions, or alveoli."
3) Other toxic and cancer causing
compounds can attach to the smallest smoke particles and enter the lungs at the
same time.
