President George W. Bush,
We are in receipt of a letter, dated June 5, 2003 from Desiree Thompson, your Special Assistant and Director of Presidential Correspondance. The letter states that you cannot accommodate our request to proclaim the Month of May as National "MCS" Awareness & Education month. We are very concerned by your unwillingness to accommodate our request and to extend to the millions of us nationwide suffering from Toxic Injury the same support and recognition that you have alloted other illnesses & disabilities. By simply signing our proclamation you could save lives and livestyles of the very people you have sworned to protect – so please clarify for us why you do not feel we are worthy of the same right to proclamation. Toxic Injury (MCS) is just as insidious and debilitating to all those affected as any biological weapon or any of the other illnesses in which you have signed a proclamation since entering the office of Presidency.
Before we add the letter of June 5, 2003 to our website we want to offer you an opportunity to explain to the millions nationwide with Toxic Injuries why our request has been denied. We feel that our illnesses are in line with and just as deserving of a proclamtion as:
Cancer Control Month
National Poison Prevention week
National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month
National Alzhelmers Month
National Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Week
National Diabetes Month
National Alcohol & Drug Addiction Recovery Month.
as well as the many others that you have already signed.
Toxic Injuries may include but are not limited to reactive airway dysfunction, brain toxic encephalopathy, Parkinson’s, Gulf War Illness, ADD, ADHD, cancer, ms, immune dysfunction syndrome, chronic fatigue, migraines, irritant asthma and more. According to the EPA there are many environmental asthma triggers commonly found in our schools.
Mr. President, the reality of toxic chemical exposures and the known health damage and destruction that they are forcing upon the people, the environment and our natural resources is so grim that no one wants to admit it – address it or be held accountable for it! This attitude that if we don’t talk about it, or we point the finger elsewhere maybe people will think it isn’t real and it will go away is ridiculous, insulting and must stop! People are dying and families are being ripped apart due to chemical poisoning and air pollution. Invisible Barriers STOP those with chemical hypersensitivity from enjoying the same rights and privileges others take for granted. Toxic Injury has already left many of us so ill and disabled that we are unable to leave our homes to attend school, church, work, shop or socialize. Some of our daily exposures are life- threatening because many of these chemicals poison the brain and our nervous systems, disrupting their impulses to vital internal organs such as the heart, lungs and kidneys.
President Bush, we have been seeking your help since the beginning of your presidency and feel it is senseless and against the very core of what America stands for to let the health, well - being and quality of life or life itself of so many to continue to be further compromised when safer choices, practices and products are readily available.
Toxic Injury is of epedmic proportions and so are its enormous & tragic consequences. Through awareness and avoidance a huge part of its total distruction could be easily and economically prevented. We must not pass the responsbility of this tragedy on to our children, grandchildren and future leaders. The disabilities and restrictions forced upon us by Toxic Injury may have physically barred many of us from coming to Washington to meet and discuss this issue with you but many of us have expressed our concerns to you via our current petition site at:
http://www.PetitionOnline.com/31032/petition.html. Please visit with us there and read the messages and pleas for your help from some of those whose lives and/or quality of life has already been destroyed by unnecessary toxic chemical exposures and/or air pollution. Of course, we will also be letting our voices be heard in the upcoming election; but in the interim millions of us will be waiting, watching and praying that as our President you will take the bull by the horns and help protect the citizens of America by granting our proclamation.
According to the letter of June 5th, 2003 from the Whitehouse, are we to believe that the proclamations listed above as well as the others that you have signed were issued with regard to the passage of a Congressional joint resolution, or traditional observances and hoildays, such as Mother’s Day, Veterans Day, and Thanksgiving? We have previously requested that you email us any requirments/guidelines (including medical and/or legal if applicaple) necessary to obtain a proclmation; as of today 08-04-03 we have yet to receive any.
Mr. President, in these troubled times; the eyes of Americans and those of
the world are upon you and the United States. Recently, all of America & the
world watched, some in total support, others with great apprehension as you
called our troops into action. Many answered your call to duty and regrettably
some precious lives were lost defending us against the possibility of a chemical
attack. We agree with you that the threat of chemical warfare is terrifying but
unfortunately for years now it has been and continues to be a reality for
millions right here in the United States of America. Be it from a terrorist
attack, active duty in our armed services, job related or from toxic chemical
exposures in our everyday products and surroundings poison is poison and
we ask you to exercise your power and responsibility to stop this disaster from
continuing. We feel America should set a good example for the world to follow.
Mr. President, awareness, education, and prevention are of utmost importance and must be our first line of defense! By proclaiming the month of May as Toxic Injury Awareness and Education month and through the teaching and practicing of better stewardship, we can help prevent more families (perhaps your own) from having their health & lives needlessly destroyed or prematurely ended by unnecessary, toxic chemical exposures and air pollution! By helping to raise awareness & education as preventative measures people everywhere will remember and thank you for years and generations to come. We can’t think of any better legacy then one that protects the health and well being of all the citizens present and future, our environment, natural resources and the countries tourism industry, than a promise of a brighter and healthier future.
If for whatever reason you were not comfortable with the previous proclamation, we are including a revised version for your consideration. In the event that May isn’t suitable for you, any one of the eleven other available months is acceptable to us. However due to the multitude of people having their health and welfare seriously jeopardized . . . the sooner the better.
To date, the Governors of the following States have signed similar
proclamations:
Connecticut
Florida
Illinois
Kentucky
Massachusetts
Michigan
Missouri
Nevada
New Mexico
North Carolina
Washington

Proclamation
WHEREAS, people of all ages nationwide and throughout the world have developed a condition know as Toxic Injury, also referred to by some as Toxic Poisoning, Chemically Induced Illness, Environmental Illness and/or MCS. Toxic Injuries may include but are not limited to reactive airway dysfunction, brain toxic encephalopathy, Parkinson’s, Gulf War Illness, ADD, ADHD, cancer, ms, immune dysfunction syndrome, irritant asthma, chronic fatigue, migraines and more. According to the National Academy of Sciences, 37 million Americans suffer from environmental illness.
WHEREAS, Toxic Injury is characterized by heightened sensitivity to very small amounts of air pollution, and other toxins found in our everyday products and environment. It can be caused by short-term or chronic exposure to one or more chemicals, frequently pesticides, and solvents and can start at any age. It knows "NO" boundaries. Every person, young, old, rich, poor, regardless of color, creed or education, "EVERYONE" is at Risk!
WHEREAS Toxic Injury may include multiple, often disabling illnesses, affecting the respiratory, central nervous, immune, musculoskeletal, porphyrin, metabolism and endocrine systems and can be life threatening. Symptoms may include but are not limited to severe headaches, poor coordination, heart palpations, stroke like symptoms, seizures, chronic fatigue, aching joints and muscles, burning sensation, metallic taste in mouth, difficulty breathing and concentrating, short term memory loss, irritated eyes, nose, ears, throat, and/or skin rashes.
WHEREAS, Toxic Injury is a chronic debilitating condition for which there is no known cure, causing serious financial, employment, learning, housing, health, social and other consequences. It is crucial for those with Toxic Injury to have the support and understanding of their government, families, friends, and society in general as they struggle with the restrictions and isolation now placed on them.
WHEREAS, Invisible Barriers stop those with chemical hypersensitivity from enjoying the same rights and privileges others take for granted but given a controlled environment and reasonable accommodations many of the chemically ill could once again be self-reliant and financially independent.
WHEREAS, The prevalence of these illnesses and the lack of knowledge and qualified doctors clearly warrant further education in this field for the public in general, practicing doctors, dentists & rescue personnel alike. "Knowledge is Power", and "that" Power of Knowledge can save precious lives!
THEREFORE, I George W Bush, president of the United States of America in support of increased awareness, education, understanding and research into the causes, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of Toxic Injury do hereby officially designate May 2004 and forward as Toxic Injury Awareness & Education Month.
