The offices of the President of the United States of America, Presidents, Prime
Ministers and all World Leaders,
The reality of toxic chemical exposures and the known health damage they are capable of causing the people, the environment and our natural resources is so grim that no one wants to admit it ~ address it or be held accountable for it! However ~ Admit it ~ Address it and be held Accountable for it we must.
We, the people carry the direct consequences of the decisions and choices our government, corporations, businesses, developers and others make. Their actions or lack thereof will influence not only our lives but the lives of others (especially those of our children and grandchildren ~ our future leaders) as well, for generations to come. The loss of our health, family, friends, independence, economic productivity, the health of our environment and natural resources will only continue to worsen without raising awareness & education as preventative measures and implementing and utilizing safer choices. We must not continue to allow action without thought. We must stop allowing financial benefit to take priority over the health of our citizens and the survival of our planet.
The lives, health, education and future of many millions of children and adults worldwide are being compromised by air pollution, exposures to mold, pesticides, chlorinated cleaning products “air fresheners” (petrochemical derivatives) and other toxic chemicals found in our homes, schools, and places of employment, as well as our environment and nature resources. For far too long, toxic exposures have and continue to cause serious life altering injury/illnesses that are of epidemic proportions and so are its enormous and tragic consequences. People are dying, lives are being destroyed and families are being ripped apart physically, emotionally and financially. Sadly, some of us have had to prematurely bury our loved ones because of these senseless and unnecessary toxic exposures.
Some of these chemicals are already listed on the EPA, RCRA and CERCIA Hazardous waste lists. Many are known to be carcinogenic, endocrine/hormone disrupting, respiratory irritants, and/or a sensitizer capable of having serious, adverse health affects on the human body and the environment. Toxic Injury may include multiple, often disabling illnesses, affecting the respiratory, central nervous, immune, musculoskeletal, porphyrin metabolism and endocrine (hormone) systems and can be life threatening. Symptoms may include but are not limited to flu like symptoms, severe sinus and/or migraine headaches, difficulty breathing, trouble concentrating, short term memory loss, poor coordination, stroke like symptoms, seizures, heart palpations, chronic fatigue, aching joints and muscles, burning sensation, metallic taste in mouth, irritated eyes, nose, ears, throat, and/or skin rashes.
Toxic Injury is also referred to by some as toxic poisoning, chemically induced illness, environmental illness, gulf war illness and/or MCS. It is now known that this is neural sensitization with documented self-perpetuating biochemical changes in the brain. This is a chronic debilitating condition for which there is no known cure. Treatment is expensive, requires major environmental controls and few doctors are trained to treat/help heal the medical effects. Other medical conditions aggravated by chemical exposures include migraine, asthma, sinusitis, otitis, emphysema, autoimmune diseases, chronic fatigue, liver disease, attention deficit, hyperactivity, autism, parkinson’s, fibromyalgia, and many more diseases involving inflammation. Toxic Injury causes serious financial, employment, learning, housing, health, social and other consequences. Once sensitized, our bodies adversely react to more substances at less, even minute levels which can instantaneously cripple us, causing great difficulty breathing, problems with coordination, thinking, memory lapses, seizures, heart palpitations, and more. At the very least, it causes major lifestyle changes and restrictions in not only our lives, but in those around us. The devastating and debilitating illnesses caused by said exposures make it impossible for many to work, attend school, church, socialize or even care for themselves.
Just as physical barriers prevent wheelchair access, for those who become more intolerant to many lower dose further exposures “chemical barriers” prevent entry and use of public facilities, schools, and places of employment to those with Toxic Injury. Chemical barriers STOP those with toxically induced heightened sensitivities from enjoying the same rights and privileges others take for granted. Given a controlled environment and reasonable accommodations many of the chemically injured/ill could once again be self-reliant and financially independent and “not” forced to go into the welfare system. Through the teaching and practicing of better stewardship, and implementing the precautionary principle “better safe than sorry” many could avoid becoming ill in the first place.
Making safer choices, raising awareness & education and taking a preventative approach to health care (ounce of prevention is worth far more than an pound of cure), improving the quality of our indoor/outdoor air, protecting our water supply, forests and other natural resources along with working to keep our food chain pure and implementing truth in advertising would go a long way in creating a healthier, brighter and more prosperous future for all. Utilizing simple precautionary measures could also help reverse/lessen some of the symptoms thereby restoring/improving the quality of life to those struggling daily from Toxic Injury as well as reducing the overall cost of healthcare worldwide.
The prevalence of these illnesses and the lack of knowledge and qualified doctors clearly warrant further education in this field for the public in general, our future as well as practicing doctors, dentists & rescue personnel alike. It is our hope that the misdiagnosis, mistreatment, and discrimination against those with these illnesses will cease once our government officials, medical professionals, family members and society in general become more educated on these serious, life altering/threatening issues. Thomas Edison once said: "The doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet and in the cause and prevention of disease”. With safer choices readily available, affordable, effective and cost affective as well ~ is it not past time for us to heed Thomas Edison’s words of wisdom?
There is an urgent need for safer less toxic measures for user- friendly medical and dental care facilities, emergency assisted and residential housing. The existing ones are filled with so many dangerous, heavy duty cleaning products, disinfectants, pesticides and other irritating toxins that they are rendered off limits to the chemically ill. The very basic, human rights and needs necessary for survival are currently being denied to those needing them the most. Doctors and other health care providers, social workers, counselors, vocational rehabilitation workers need training in diagnosis and prevention of harm from chemical exposure. ICD Diagnostic codes for toxic effects of many chemicals found in our everyday environment and surroundings are readily available.
Building maintenance personnel need training in less toxic building management. Pest control personnel and farmers need training in the need for safe pest control.
It is crucial for those with Toxic Injury to have the support and understanding of their government, families, friends, and society in general as they struggle with the restrictions and isolation now placed on them.
Together through awareness & education and the teaching and practicing of better stewardship, and implementing that precautionary principle “better safe than sorry” we can help prevent more families (perhaps your own) from having their health & lives needlessly destroyed or prematurely ended by unnecessary toxic chemical exposures and air pollution
Whether from a terrorist attack, active duty in the armed services, job related or from air pollution or toxic chemical exposures in our everyday products and surroundings poison is still poison.
Toxic Injury and the devastating toll it takes will keep rising until we work together to STOP THE POISONING! Avoidance and making Safer Informed Choices and Decisions must be our first line of Defense, as we too are fast becoming an endangered species!
We ask each and everyone of our leaders worldwide to unite and exercise your power and responsibility to help stop these avoidable tragedies from continuing by signing your name, and support (please include your title and country) to the following proclamation declaring the month of May as: “World~Wide” Toxic Injury Awareness and Education month. Please send your signed proclamation to our Florida office at the address below.
You may visit: www.mcsbeaconofhope.com to view the signatures & comments from citizens across the globe that are struggling to survive with Toxic Injury. Please check back often as others sign on asking for your signature & support.
Sincerely, your friends in Hope & Health,
Peggy & Julia
