Sir; This problem has been estimated in two seperate studies to affect approximately 16% of the population or millions of your constituents. It is a preventable ailment and some potential victims even have certain biomarkers which can be identified if physicians can be educated in the basic toxicology omitted from most medical school curriculums. Dealing with this ailment can be a spur to new industry and development of safeguards for existing industry. All citizens can benefit from the lessons to be learned and persons like myself can continue to contribute to the GNP instead of becoming a burden upon society as I have at the age of 45. Please act and save lives. Thank you.

After a chemical exposure at work on May 4, 1999, I am now reacting to various chemicals including gasoline. I am allergic to para-phenylenediamine that is also used in gasoline. Less than two weeks ago, Oct. 24, 01, again I lost another job. This was the sixth job I have lost since getting chemicals on me. President Bush, please help us. I live in a state (Hawaii) that thinks pesticides should be used EVERYWHERE. Neighbors poison neighbors, schools, pedestrian walkways, public parks, government buildings, and MANY other places where children and others, including those of us with impaired immune systems travel. Our state is worried about attracting tourists and having the island "look" good. It does not listen to those of us who are becoming ill from these horrible practices. Golf courses are in almost every neighborhood poisoning everyone on a daily basis. Restricted pesticides are the norm. Outlawed chemicals (ie chloradane) can still be obtained here. There is absolutely NO education for people on our islands. We have evacuated schools several times a year because a neighbor has mixed chemicals and sprayed nearby. This must stop. We are looking to you for your leadership on this ever increasing problem.

Recognition of the vast numbers of people affected with MCS is sorely needed, and long, long, over due. Many of us suffer from isolation, and lack of medical care due to unemployment , simply because we can not find a safe enviroment to work in ! Socially MCS is not an "authentic" disease , public awareness needs to be addressed.

My wife has become dibilitated with this truly horrible disability. I have watched her go from a vibrant healthy athlete to a bed-ridden, totally disabled person. The claims of this being a psychological illness are an outrage! She worked for 18 years for the airline industry, was at the top of her salary, could travel anywhere in the world, had great health/dental insurance, was active in 4 sports. NO ONE can tell me she EVER had a psychological problem. NO ONE would give up our wonderful life to lie in bed in excruciating pain, vomiting at times. THIS ILLNESS IS REAL!!!!!!!

I have migranes at the first breath of perfumes and chemicals and am trying to survive working and living. I am unable to go to church anymore, theaters, stores, peoples homes, restaurants, ect. My life is ruined. I am now struggling working for a doctor to support our household. My employer is not understanding and has now taken me off my job to learn the receptionist job. This requires me to work all day for two days out of the week to train. Even though they know I get migranes with exposure to the patients perfumes, they do not care. I am required to do this part of my job in order to keep working there. I will now have a migrane almost everyday . I have never missed one day of work due to my condition. Please help. How can they do this to me. I only want to work and support my family and not be sick.

I was diagnoised with MCS, Chronic Fatigue syndrome, and having severe asthma in 1995. Extensive blood testing showed that an additive in gasoline caled MTBE caused my health ailment. MTBE produces formaldehyde and other poisnous gases when it is burned. MTBE is responsable for a onset of ailments of health complaints in alska in 1992. In 6 weeks of using MTBE in their fuel the govenor of Alaska refused to use it. MTBE is known to reduce the imuine system, cause respritory ailments, nourlogical disorders, such as ADD, loss of concentration and others along with an array of health symptoms. The usage of MTBE is in direct violation of the 1990 clean air act because it increases formaldehyde and other poisionous gasess when burned. MTBE is also responsable for poisioning our water supply. Many states have tried to ban MTBE. The use of such chemicals are wide spread and effecting everyone of all ages

My life has changed from a productive, hardworking, high achiever to a life of isolation and illness... I want this disorder recognized, researched and cured.... I want the medical community to recognize MCS as a legitimate disorder and know how to test for it and diagnose it... I want everyone to know the dangers of synthetic toxic chemicals in their everyday life. I want fragrance ingredients tested (all of them) and the bottles labeled if the ingredients are not safe for humans to wear and breath...I want corporations to take responsibility for the damages they have knowingly caused... I want corporations to care more for the health of society than they do for their profit margins... I want the public educated so that we can stop this disorder from claiming more and more people in this great country... I want our voices to be heard and listened to... Please hear our truth... MCS has significant impacts on every aspect of life: family relationships, ability to work, travel, or attend public events. Finding intelligent medical care and appropriate housing is difficult and expensive, especially when one has lost their health benefits along with their livelihood. Contrary to the self-interested claims of those who profit from chemicals, MCS is a physiological illness, and its victims are not to blame. MCS is preventable (although not currently curable), and it is not going to disappear on its own. It is heartbreaking to go from being a fully functioning, active member of society to a virtual recluse. However, the most destructive element of MCS is the "psychogenic causation" propaganda spread by those who would be forced to pay if the truth about MCS were acknowledged. How many more must be injured before our country takes action?

Quite often people don't understand the true root of their illness. I highly reccommend you read the book Allergies and Candida by Steven Rochlitz Phd. I know the information in the book ultimately led to my husband recovery from his chronic illnesses, incuding MCS. You might also read "Tooth Truth" by Frank Jerome DDS as many people with ecological illnesses can't get better without also dealing with dental issues. Both my husband and I are now strong advocates of preventing these problems, specifically Indoor Air Quality problems need to be addressed in our nations schools. Please help those of us who have had our lives so severely affected that we have to isolate ourselves in order to live. It is such a devastating disease that grows progressively worse all of the time and I can't seem to get help from Social Security Disability so I can seek treatment at the EHCD specialists and make ends meet. I have been waiting for nearly two years for SSD and can hardly go to my daughter's basket ball games due to exposure, much less work. It is hard work to try to keep my home environment livable and impossible to work. When I get around the general public, I begin to hurt like severe arthritis, get severe headaches, lose my equilibrium, get blurred and unfocused vision, feel like I am very drunk and my body and throat begin to swell. I have to get away from the people, take benedril and prednisone and often have to give myself a shot of addrenalyn. I feel an urgency for President George Bush to set aside this special month of May to recognize the growing problem of chemical sensitivity. Currently there are so many people who are ill from this disease/health problem, yet they are being treated for numerous complaints without true diagnosis of their illness. It is my belief if the true sufferers were identified we would be looking at a health epidemic. If we make haste and alert the medical professionals as well as the general public we could head off a pandemic.

I have had to quit my job because the scent of perfumes, colognes etc., caused me to have breathing problems. I was FIRED from my former teaching job because I was unable to tolerate mold & chemical scents in classroom. Yes, those of us who react to chemicals are discriminated against. Please help stop the use of perfumes, colognes, pesticides etc. in public places that interfere with so many lives. We know that medicine is keeping us all alive longer but the quality of life is terrible. A huge percentage of illness in the aging is from the body's constant bombardment by toxins in our environment. We breathe toxins; they are outgassing from the materials our homes are made of. They're in our foods from pesticides and tainted water. They are absorbed into our bodies from the synthetics in fabrics (i.e. formaldehyde) and from dangerous beauty products and cleansers. The Cancer society has published lists of known carcinogens....why aren't they banned as cyclamates were??? What good is it, living to be 90 if you have a shut down immune systm and all the attendant ills? It would be a shame if the drug companies took a loss of revenue because, with a cleaned up environment, we could enjoy freedom from so much pain and suffering without benefit of false, drug induced feelings of wellbeing. Less need for Prozac or pain killers. Please wake up and help mankind. We have to start somewhere!

I haven't worked a stitch since Feb.'98. I am a disabled research scientist. Prior to the bimonthly exposure to organophosphate (dursban) and a synthetic pyrethrin (demand) insecticide exposures AND their corresonding solvent carriers, sprayed under FDA/GMP regulations, I was a highly competent/functioning individual. MCS has ruined my health and wealth. Chemical avoidance is absolutely necessary. Petrochemicals are a huge problem. Local physicians are no help. Only physicians with Board Certifications in Occupational, Environmental, Toxicological and Internal Medicine have been able to diagnose my poisonings and only orthomolecular psychiatrist/homeopathic physician have been able to help me recover. I am displeased President Bush with your current track record with our environment and ergonomics; our MCS bodies can't handle repetitive motion. Please do a 180 immediately!

"I have a sister that has MCS, CFIDS, asthma and allergies. It's essential that she, and others with MCS, get the medical care they need, yet a ride in an ambulance, entering an emergency room, staying in a hospital, or even visiting any medical facility can be extremely dangerous to their health due to all the perfumes, air fresheners, and strong chemicals used in these facilities and by medical personnel. Perfume and air fresheners don't mix with the medical profession and the use of them within any medical facilities should be banned."

The U.S. government needs to start taking care of it's people, instead of continuing corrupt activities in the name of greed. Millions of Americans have MCS and millions more will follow suit. Chemicals in perfumes and other scented products are deleterious to people's health and the environment. People who wear perfumes are in danger, themselves. Perfumes contain hundreds of untested unregulated petrochemicals, solvents, carcinogens, aldehyes, numerous chemicals listed on the EPA's Hazardous Waste List, and more. Apparently our government is more worried about personal monetary gain, then the health of it's people. Read the truth: www.fpinva.org and www.ehnca.org

I was a legal secretary for 23 years earning $50,000/yr., and making a mighty contribution to the tax system, with an active social life, including volunteer activities. Today, I am a housebound invalid in total isolation from society due to the toxic airborne chemicals contained in fragrance products. Fragrance products contain neurotoxins, carcinogens (scientifically proven to cause breast and prostate cancer), respiratory irritants, and other chemicals that cannot be identified because there are no Material Safety Data Sheets. The FDA REFUSES to honor the petition filed by EHN & Cancer Prevention Coalition to have CK's Eternity misbranded. There is NO labeling on these products, in violation of the Toxic Substances Control Act! American consumers have a right to know what they are putting on their bodies and breathing in the air! As you read this President Bush, keep in mind your brother, Jeb, has made such a proclamation in the State of Florida.

Dear President Bush. I believe it's time for the public to be made aware of what their chemicals are doing to chemically sensitive people, not to mention, to themselves and others that are not yet chemically sensitive. There are too many toxic chemicals being manufactured and introduced into the environment. When a person can't go outside their house because of pesticides and synthetic fragrances something is very wrong. It's time for the government to stop giving free rein to chemical companies and demand they stop manufacturing chemicals that are so harmful to the earth and all living creatures.

The number of persons with Multiple Chemical Poisonings / Injuries is climbing rapidly and now we see, at a much earlier age. The amount of environmental chemicals persistant in our communities, even the banned pesticides, is out of control (proven by toxicological analysis). When I became chemically poisoned / injured in 1998, I had no idea how large the numbers were of people suffering this devastating afflicition. MCS clearly needs to be formally recognized.

I have run a health/environment ed organization (EarthSave LI) for the past 11 years. This has given me an eagle-eye view of MCS. There area many more sufferers than the casual observer might guess. Sensitive individuals are not taken seriously by government health officials--as their potentially strong negative reaction to pesticides is not weighed against the perceived "reasons" for spraying. They represent millions of who apparently don't matter when it comes to the formation of public chemical policy. This can only be explained by a lack of awareness of MCS on the part of our decision makers. We are in the first 50 years of a chemical experiment, with over 70,000 chemicals being used in our homes and schools--never having been tested for their synergistic effect on our health. Those with MCS act as an early warning sign of a toxic environment that all Americans are in fact subject to. Help increase awareness of this problem by designating May as MULTIPLE CHEMICAL SENSITIVITY AWARENESS MONTH.

I have lived with an amazing lady for 8 years who battles this illness DAILY. Evenings out are a rarity, due to the fact that we eat organic food whenever possible. A weekend away to a romantic getaway. FORGET ABOUT IT! The air fresheners, cleaning products, scented candles, soaps.... well you get the picture, would send her into a downward spiral and she would be bedridden for days or weeks. We moved from our apartment in the "big city" to our little house in the country because the air is so much cleaner. And lo and behold, their trying to turn our area into another toxic wastedump. Visiting my family is done only in the summer, since the oil that my parents use to heat their house makes her deathly ill. And just because she looks "alright to me" as my idiot family so often says, she is expected to be able to work a 40+ hour a week job. Just because you do not look disabled or handicapped doesn't mean you're not. I am a congenital heart defect survivor, but I look "just fine". PLEASE SIGN THIS!

The acknowledgement of the MCS community is absolutely necessary to assist in educating the public about the dangers and adverse effects that the use of poisonous chemical pesticides has on the health and safety of the world's population as well as to the environment. The use and mis-use of poisonous chemical pesticides are not only killing pests, they are killing people and the environment in which we live. It all has to stop NOW! President Bush, I'm an MCS victim of at least twenty years, from a combination of common household and personal-care products, pesticides, etc. The fragrance industry, chemical companies, and others, should be held accountable for destroying people's lives, with their toxic, poisonous chemicals. The public Must be made aware of what is being done to us, in increasing numbers, and will probably continue, until the greedy people who are responsible, have their lives destroyed too. We deserve as much recognition and help as those who suffer from cancer, and other horrible illnesses. Please help us.

Mr. Bush, Until I was afflicted with MCS two years ago as a result of having my carpet cleaned, I would have never realized what it was all about. I believe the public needs to be educated, as well as medical professionals. I have yet to find a doctor who can truly help me. In the mean time, I have great difficulty going to public places, church, meetings, shopping, school, even for a walk when lawns are being treated. Perfumes, cleaning products, scented candels, air "fresheners", and any thing with a chemical "odor" make it difficult for me to breathe! Even though I am one of the relatively few to react to these things, they are in fact hazardous to EVERYONE's health! Do us all a favor and educate the nation by enacting this proclamation!

After being exposed to numerous toxins at work (in a candy plant of all places) and becoming seriously ill, I was fired. No, benefits, nothing. I have had to fight for the treatment, which should never have been in question. I still have significantly high levels of toluene, 2-methylpentane, 3-methylpentane and n-Hexane in my system. I must suffer every day and the corporations who are doing this to us are getting away scott-free.

My wife suffers everyday from shortness of breath, loss of balance, headaches, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia and a host of other symptoms and syndromes. All of this because she was exposed to toxic chemicals at her place of employment. Then they dismiss her like she was nothing. She deserves better than what she is getting. She deserves proper treatment for her condition (which the insurance carriers have fought for over 3 years). Please make a stand a do what is right for all of us.

In december of 1999, my husband was exposed to solvents in a floor sealer when we were adding an addition to our home. since then he has become sicker and sicker. We were among the 'lucky' ones who were able to get a diagnosis of MCS and find a safe home in a cleaner area, albeit, a thousand miles away from family and friends, leaving our much loved home, furniture, clothes and pet cat. Our whole life-style has changed and my husband spends his days taking treatments to rid his body of toxins and researching other ways to get well. We are trying to educate our children and their children,, and our friends so that they may avoid getting this devastating disease. Thankfully, my husband was just retired, so has a pension, but many people are in the prime of their life and lose their jobs with no help or recognition from the government or the chemical companies who refuse to take responsiblity for the damage they are doing to people and this planet. Please help us all by signing this for AWARENESS of MCS

We are still left pretty much isolated to car-camp, evacuate to remote rural outposts, and beg for mercy regarding our exceedingly unglamorous housing requirements, or else submit to the toxic nursing homes or psych hospitals for a final few months of "care." . . . The publicly funded and contracted insecticide-spraying companies drive us out. The publicly funded and contracted painters drive us out. . .These and related problems are readily addressable, correctable barriers to all residents' health, and more critically, to our very access to housing - . . . we are re-defining justice in housing policy.

I have suffered from MCS for eight years due to an exposure from the pesticide Dursban. It has changed my life in very many negative ways: loss of my job, disbelief that there is truly anything physically wrong with me from my family and friends, loss of the choice to visit friends and family, shop, travel, go for a walk, go to church, the list goes on and on. Because now ,not only am I sensitive to pesticides but a host of other chemicals. Mr. President we desperately need more education and awareness of MCS. Whatever may chemically injure a person, it is the ubiquitous poisonous untested and unregulated hazardous waste chemicals in perfumes and other artifically scented products that KEEP people injured. For God's sake what are you waiting for, two thirds of the people in this country to be too sick to work? When it effects the entities in congress, then we can be sure to get some relief. It's an atrocity, Mr. Bush. MCS became an EPIDEMIC, since fragrance formulations became 100% synthetic crap, full of over 800 known sensitizing chemicals. Let's not think about the numerous carcinogens for now. Is this country crazy? Damn right it is. But are you going to help the people, or your petrochemical rich friends?

There is far too little awareness of the way chemicals are in effect polluting our environment--not just the ozone layer. Everyone will be suffering from some form of mysterious allergic malady eventually, unless there is a different approach to adding a new chemical, petrochemical or not, to the environment. Instead of assuming any new chemical is fine until proven otherwise, the premise should be reversed: in an environment that since the Second World War has been glutted with new chemicals, the assumption should be that any new chemical is potentially problemmatic until proven, definitively, not to be. I live in a state complacent about its air quality and environment--but Hawaii's environment has visibly declined in quality even in the past decade. One only has to look out the window--the sealed window of unhealthily air-conditioned buildings that in fact are using too much fuel to make artificial, potentially polluted air. Take it seriously--we're into an over-technologized, -chemicalized world.

Mr. Bush (I refuse to call you President as you were clearly appointed by the Felonious 5 on the Supreme Court), this is a matter of grave public urgency. I know you've always embraced generous PAC donations from the petro-chemical industry for your campaigns. Nevertheless, the nation's public health depends on our government, elected or otherwise, recognizing the deadly effects of synthetic poisons from every manner of chemicals in our environment. I have experienced symptoms of this problem myself, and asthma makes the chemicals, such as household cleaners & detergents, all the more dangerous to my health. If I had my druthers, I'd prosecute the petro-chemical industry for crimes against humanity (among other victims) for killing us with their lucrative poisons. I know your Ashcroft won't do that, but you are morally compelled as the alleged leader of the "free world" to defend the safety and health of the American people by proactively destroying the causes of MCS.

Dear Mr. President, As a conservative, Republican who voted for you and who also appreciates the job you have done so far, I am signing this petition in hopes that you will sign this declaration as a first step toward helping those affected by MCS. Due to my mother's MCS, it has become nearly impossible for her to visit me in California, and extremely difficult for me to visit her in Oregon. Because we rarely get to see her, MCS has not only affected her health and quality of life dramatically, but also the quality of life for her children and her grandchildren as well. MCS is real, please acknowledge its existence and begin to make positive changes that will help these people who are suffering. Thank you.

Mr President. I appeal to you with this very serious matter. Your fight against Terrorism is commendable, and needed. Please consider this fight as well. You said during your campaign that one concern of your was education related, That if one person didn't have a desk to sit in you would fight for that right. A healthy child that is in a public school that had to stand in comparison to a person suffering from Multiple Chemical Sensitivities is lucky. Why should a once healthy thriving promising individual suffer due to there own environment. Yes I know perhaps this afflicts a very few, but how many classrooms have you visited where a child has no seat. environmental issues have not been a very high agenda for your campaign, with out a clean environment you will have no people to lead. Please consider the Month of May M C S awareness Month. A simple thing to do for elevating you environment awareness program , and perspective from the people. Thank You sincerely Darrin Mathew Cappotto

I have been diagnosed with Environmental Allergies, which after reading about MCS/EI, I think may be related to this desease. I know that for YEARS I have grown my own ORGANIC vegetables and do not use pesticides in or around the house, limit the use of chemicals to clean in the house and try to stay as far away as possible from colognes and the like. Seems to help some, but not fully... I support this cause and am glad that President George W. Bush has declaired May as MCS Month! The general public needs to be educated on the issue of MCS. People think it is "all in your head," without understanding how completely debilitating this condition is to many of the body's systems. My mother has suffered with it for years, and our family has struggled to accept her condition and to support her in improving her quality of life. People NEED to know about MCS, and funds must be generated for the necessary research to find a cure.

There has got to be more ways to help people who are chemically sensitized to find safe affordable housing. I have tried for over a year to find a safer environment to live that would still be somewhat close to the family that I have here. Everyday is a battle trying to find a place that hasnt't been painted, carpeted, varnished etc. And since I am living on SSDi that doesn't leave much money to live off of. I had a job as an x-ray technician that I loved and because of not enough proper ventillation of the processing chemicals my life and income have been turned inside out and upside down. What are we supposed to do? Where is the help that should be there from out government? I implore you to listen and help us all out

My sister suffers from MCS, not only does she suffer from it she suffers from her coworkers who do not believe her and continue to use perfumes and such around her. Which causes her to react (and sometimes has to go by ambulance to the Emergency Room) and miss work

Our nation's lax labeling laws make it difficult and dangerous to be a consumer. We are forced to make, grow, hunt and raise most of our own food and meat for the sake of otherwise being poisoned by unlisted ingredients, processing chemicals, and pesticides.

Why wouldn't natural substances be used if available? I would be willing to pay slightly more for products that were made with natural ingredients as opposed to kerosene. How gross!
