Safer Personal Care

 

Hair Moisturizers:

Olive Oil (Warm Olive Oil, apply to wet hair, leave on 30 to 60 minutes then wash out)

Stale Beer (Open can of beer and let sit overnight, rinse through hair…odor will disappear in a short time)

Mayonnaise (Apply to wet hair and let sit for 30 to 60 minutes then wash out)

Avocado hydrates dry skin dry skin and hair, has vit E and phytosterols (much like skins own lipids), provides a barrier to environmental elements and locks in moisture. Also, you can mix with egg yolk and banana (note avocado and banana cross react with latex –do not use if you have latex allergies)(“Making Aromatherapy Creams and Lotions” Storey 2000)

 

Hair Spray:

2-cups “Hot” water – 1Tbl sugar – 1Tbl fresh squeezed lemon juice - 2tsp= 1small pack of Knox gelatine. Mix, strain, cool and put into a spray bottle – Works Great!

 

Skin Care:

Don’t throw out those coffee grounds ~ use on skin to remove dead skin and freshen it up

Sugar and salt along with oat powder to exfoliate and soften skin, Sea salt contains skin-nourishing minerals. We wet it and scrub legs, arms and face (very gently). To make it even gentler, mix with your favorite oil. Start out easy to learn what your skin can tolerate.

Face mask: mix approximately a tablespoon each of cocoa powder and buttermilk ~ apply to your skin (face, arms, legs). Preliminary research shows that topically applied cocoa reduces skin irritation and combats cellular damage (Journal of Nutrition, 2006, vol. 136, no. 5)

Green Tea: Brew strong tea--one or two bags per cup of water and apply to face after cleansing as a compress soaked in the tea. Caffeien and EGCG help reduce swelling and calm skin. (Current Drug Tagets, 2003, vol3, no. 3)

Rub on a bit of olive oil--rich in vit E and antioxidants for dry skin and hair.
